Weekly church services are a time where we can all come together to practice reverence for the Lord. We can find peace and solace listening to the pastor’s words, and a communal setting to practice our faith together is a powerful experience. Before the pastor starts preaching, the worship leader takes the stage for musical worship before the sermon. Worship through music is a wonderful way to channel our faith and set the tone before the sermon.
But what makes a good worship leader? Brian Overton currently stands as co-worship leader at St. Anne of Grace Episcopal Church and spreads his love of worship as the lead vocalist and bassist of contemporary Christian rock band, His Word. Brian has been an active member of his church for as long as he can remember. As a leader within the church, he strives to offer steadfast faithfulness with the community. He shares the top skills of an effective worship leader:
- Musical skills. Obviously the gig involves playing music, so worship leaders should be skilled with a few different instruments and be proficient in playing music.
- Engaging. Worship leaders have to elicit passion out of the audience in order to keep them engaged week to week.
- Understand the sermon material. To have the most impact and to properly set the tone for the day, worship leaders should match the music to the messages of that day’s sermon.
- Communication and organisational skills. Teamwork is everything, and worship leaders have to work with their team in order to have a high impact.
- Relationship building. Besides playing music, it is important that worship leaders build relationships with and mentor fellow congregation members.
