Great music comes from the heart and soul. Because of this, creating music is a wonderful way to express your faith and devotion to God. Music is also something that has the power to bring people together – what better what to do that then by combining your musical talent and faith? Brian Overton currently stands as co-worship leader at St. Anne of Grace Episcopal Church and spreads his love of worship as the lead vocalist and bassist of contemporary Christian rock band, His word. He shares some words of wisdom for beginner Christian musicians.
- Expose yourself to all kinds of Christian music. Listening to the way others honour God through their music could inspire you in all kinds of ways, both musically and spiritually. It is also a great idea to connect with and learn from other Christian musicians.
- Balance your creative output with time for rest and reflection. Don’t overwork yourself so much when trying to get your musical career off the ground that you lose sight of what is truly important – you’re relationship with the Lord.
- Spend time reading and understanding the Bible. It provides never ending inspiration for your musical creations. Reading the Bible provides a solid foundation for your faith so that your music is God honouring.
- Don’t be afraid to share your work. Especially as a beginner, it is easy to get nervous and shy away from the spotlight. God gave you creative abilities for a reason, and sharing your music can help inspire others.
